Stara Zagora, also known by its original name Beroe, which was changed to Ulpia Augusta Traiana by the Romans, is a city in central southern Bulgaria. The original Thracian settlement dates from the 5-4th century BC when it was called Beroe or Beroia. The city was founded by Philip II of Macedon in 342 BC. Under the Roman Empire, the city was renamed Ulpia Augusta Traiana in honor of emperor Trajan. In 1870 it was renamed Stara Zagora, which means old beyond the mountains.

Stara Zagora still shows its rich history, as still parts of the old Roman city Ulpia Augusta Traiana can be seen in the central part of the city. Also, parts of this old Roman city can be admired underneath Stara Zagora's Historical Museum. On our tour, we will show the buildings that are lesser known and we will tell you their history.
